2009 Ferrari California First Drive - (Global)

October 23rd, 2008
Previous - Next

Ferrari’s brand new California has just had its global media launch and respected UK magazine Autoexpress drove the new convertible and have awarded it a huge 5 out of 5 stars.

The Ferrari California may be more expensive than the stunning F430, however it really is a completely different buying proposition. Whilst the F430 is really only happy when travelling at speed, the California - well certainly with its settings turned to Comfort mode - is comfortable and has a supple ride even on rough B-roads.

But fear not Ferrari fans as the California is truly a Jekyll ‘n’ Hyde beast.  Autoexpress noted that by turning the steering wheel's Manettino switch to Sport, the gearchanges are sharpened, the exhaust valves suddenly open more rapidly and the suspension turns it up a notch. With this comes truly outrageous speed and an awesome noise of yelps, barks and growls. Would you expect anything less from the Ferrari of recent times who seem to do no wrong?

The ceramic brakes are praised as amazing; the new multi-link suspension provides a comfortable ride and the speed-related power-steering makes inner city driving a breeze.  But the best bit for drivers may well be the brilliant new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which Ferrari predicts will end up in every model going forward.

Being based in Australia, we’ll have to wait until 2009 to get behind the wheel of the awesome new California. However, we were fortunate enough to be at the Australian California pre-drive launch earlier this week at the stunning new Zagame Ferrari and Maserati dealership in Melbourne and agree 100% with Autoexpress with their praise of the immaculately stitched leather interior. It truly is a car worthy of the Ferrari badge.
