Safety - (Australia)

August 9th, 2007

With a four-star Euro-NCAP crash-test rating, a five-star rating from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a "Good' ranking from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the USA, Sorento clearly demonstrates that it provides excellent occupant protection.

The new Sorento range offers a range of active and passive safety features that help make the Sorento cabin a safe place to travel.

ABS brakes, driver and front passenger SRS airbags, active front headrests to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries in collisions, and front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters are all standard across the Sorento range of LX, EX and EX-L models.

Move up to the EX and EX-L models and Electronic Stability Program with traction control becomes standard along with bigger 17' alloy wheels for greater assurance in all driving conditions, reducing the risk of a rollover. Sorento EX-L also offers side curtain SRS airbags for added side protection in the event of an accident.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) uses wheel, steering angle and yaw sensors to detect when the vehicle is being driven in such a way that it may skid out of control and helps return it to a safer course by braking one or more wheels, reducing engine torque or both.

All models have ISOFIX child-seat mounting points, child safety door locks and five three-point seat belts.

Load-limiting front seat-belt pretensioners lock the belts in the optimum protection position if an accident is likely, while minimising pressure on the user's chest.
