2009 Renault Megane - (Global)

October 7th, 2008

The all new Renault Megane has just been driven by journalists with the first cars due to start arriving in European showrooms shortly.

The current generation car, launched back in 2002, will be remembered for its unique styling and the SportMegane R26 variant that was regarded by many as the number one hot hatch for the past few years.

UK magazine Autocar has just reviewed the all new car and the big news is that Renault, at least with the non hot-hatch variants, have gone for comfort over a sporty ride.

The new model is larger than the outgoing car, offering significantly more room for rear seat passengers.  It’s good to hear that the added space hasn’t come at a cost to the weight of the vehicle, on average the new car is 8kg lighter than the variant it replaces.

Autocar comment on the cars improved interior, noting that it feels capable of matching the best in the segment. I.e. Volkswagen Golf.

Behind the wheel, Autocar report that the new Megane has a feeling of lightness to drive; no hard suspension, heavy steering and gearchange.  As a result the Megane is a little more relaxed than its competitors and is a car that stresses comfort.

Australian deliveries should start in the second quarter of 2009.
