Proton Developing Hybrid Powerplants - (Global)

August 5th, 2008
Previous - Next

Proton is developing new engines to update its model range with a particular interest seen in a new hybrid powerplant. The new hybrid is part of a strategy to improve sales in global export markets as buyers seek more economical vehicles. The move will see a reduction in the use of the Mitsubishi sourced engines and will bring more innovative research and development in-house.

First prototypes of the new powerplant have been produced with testing already commenced for the launch due in 2010. Malaysia’s Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi says consumers would “be happy when they drive such a car knowing it saves fuel and does not pollute”, after test driving the new hybrid himself.

It would be likely that the new hybrid will be first seen in the GEN.2 followed by the rest of the model range.

The Jumbuck, pictured above, is currently the best selling Proton sold in Australia.
