Highly Efficient Turbocharged Engine The Key To Lotus Europa S

The Lotus has given Europa S a flexible and torquey, four cylinder, twin cam, multi-valve turbocharged engine and achieved the difficult task of combining the three major demands of modern automotive design - performance, fuel efficiency and low emissions.

In an era of global warming, high fuel costs and increasing demands for lower engine emissions, performance cars will almost certainly come under pressure.

Lotus, however, has been able to produce a car that meets economy and emission demands while delivering superior performance by utilising a relatively small, high output engine with a strong but extremely light weight chassis.

Lotus Engineering's Powertrain Division has conducted extensive research into 'engine downsizing', the concept of using advanced technologies to enable a small engine to produce the power and torque of a much larger engine, with obvious reductions in weight, fuel consumption and emissions.

The heart of the Europa S is a turbocharged Ecotec Z20LER 2.0-litre four cylinder 1998cc engine with air to air intercooler delivering high levels of performance with maximum torque of 272 Nm at 5000 rpm and power of 147 kW at 5400rpm.

It achieves around 90 percent of its maximum torque at just 2000 rpm, propelling the car from 0-100km/h in 5.8 secs and to 160 km/h in a little under 14 seconds. Maximum speed is approximately 230 km/h (143 mph).

The Europa S has a competitive power to weight ratio of 148kW / tonne.
The whole vehicle has been tested extensively around the world in hot and cold climates as well at renowned proving grounds and testing facilities.

The Lotus T4e Engine Management system has been programmed to optimise the engine performance.

The engine is mated with the lightweight M32 aluminium cased, six-speed close ratio gearbox and is fitted with the closest ratios and gearset possible.

The gearbox offers a fast, precise and light gearshift, ensuring total control and flexibility to apply the power exactly as and when required.
