Evo Trumps Targa

April 24th, 2008

In a command performance, the all conquering Mitsubishi Evolution IX Lancers dominated last weekend’s Targa Tasmania.

Taking outright honours by over 1minute 30 seconds and all the placings in the Showroom 4WD class it was the most successful marque at the event.

Breaking the dominance from previous years of the European brands, South Australian driver Steve Glenney, co driven by Bernie Webb, powered his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX home 1 minute and 31 seconds ahead of second-placed motor sport legend, Jim Richards, in a 2008 Porsche 911 GT2.

Richards, an eight-time Targa winner, co-driven by his regular partner and the former voice of V8 Supercars, Barry Oliver, was unable to sustain or match the pace of Glenney.

The triumph by Glenney, the first for Mitsubishi in the vent’s 17 year history, reinforces the rally bred quality and performance of the brand.

Supporting the large field of Evo’s in the Targa was a dedicated team of mechanics from Team Mitsubishi Ralliart, under the guidance of motor sport guru Alan Heaphy.

“To win Targa outright is a huge accolade for the vehicle, but to add to that the top placings in the 4WD Showroom class is further validation of the marque.” said Mr Heaphy.

“The flexibility and affordability of the vehicle is just amazing. Competitors have the choice of challenging for outright victory, as Glenney did successfully, or if your budget is for the 4WD Showroom class, the vehicle is a very cost competitive high performance package. We knew the vehicles were competitive and it is great to add these wins to the Evo’s already impressive list of accomplishments” he added.

Mitsubishi has dominated the serious tarmac endurance events of 2008 winning the Bathurst 12 hour and now the legendry Targa Tasmania event.
