Australian Women’s Basketball point guard Erin Phillips, with support from Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL), is set to slam dunk Olympic Gold in Beijing with the announcement of an individual sponsorship agreement.
As corporate partners to the Australian Olympic Committee, Mitsubishi has now announced individual sponsorship agreements with a selection of Australia’s elite athletes on their quest for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Among the seven athletes sponsored is Opals team member, Erin Phillips.
President and chief executive officer Robert McEniry is pleased to support such elite athletes as they work to achieve their goals.
“I can only hope that Mitsubishi’s contribution will go some way to expressing the pride we feel for all our Australian Olympians. Mitsubishi is committed to Australia’s Olympic success for the long term,” said McEniry.
After trying her hand at a variety of individual sports, Erin found her passion and her niche in the team sport of Basketball. Belonging to a strong support group is very important to the tenacious young athlete.
“Playing team sports is the best. That team camaraderie… it doesn’t get any better for me.”
At just 22 year of age, Erin already has an impressive collection of achievements, winning gold at the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships. But for the 173cm South Australian, Olympic gold remains her ultimate prize.
“I’ve got the Olympic rings on my wall so every time I wake up they’re the first things I look at,” Erin said.
However, Erin’s road to Olympic glory has not been entirely smooth. She experienced a serious setback when a knee injury threatened her chances of competing in the games, and forced Erin to forego the American season.
Boasting class-leading safety features such as Active Stability Control and Traction Control (ASTC) as standard and the all new 2.0 litre MIVEC engine, the Lancer VRX is top of the range.
