The journey to the Beijing Olympics has become just a little bit easier for five Australian athletes, thanks to sponsorship support from Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL).
In 2007 Mitsubishi announced a five-year sponsorship agreement with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), including the team entry in the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010 and the London Olympics in 2012. Following this announcement the company has decided to deepen its investment in Australia’s sporting future and offer direct sponsorship programs to four up-and-coming stars of our country’s Olympic team
Mitsubishi has signed agreements with women’s hockey player Kate Hollywood, cyclist Katie Mactier, hurdler Sally McLellan, women’s basketballer Erin Phillips and pole vaulter Steve Hooker. Each of these young Australians are outstanding athletes in their respective fields.
Kate Hollywood was selected to join the Australian Hockeyroos team in 2005, and was part of their gold medal-winning squad in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Her greatest ambition is to win an Olympic medal.
Katie Mactier has been cycling professionally since 2002 and is currently based in Spain. She has won multiple medals representing Australia and was voted Victorian Cyclist of the Year and Female Road Cyclist of the Year by CycleSport Australia in 2007.
Sally McLellan became the first woman to win both the 100 metres and 100 metres hurdles at the Australian Championships in 2005. She has also represented Australia at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, where she was part of the women’s bronze medal winning team.
Erin Phillips divides her time between Adelaide and Connecticut, where she plays for the Lightning and Sun teams respectively. She has previously represented Australia as part of the Opals team, winning gold in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and FIBA World Championships.
Steve Hooker won Commonwealth gold in 2006, breaking the Games record in the process. He also competed in the Athens Olympics, where he placed 28th, and has represented Australia at the World Junior Championships and the World University Games.
Each of the athletes will receive a twelve month loan of a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer sedan as part of the sponsorship – a vehicle whose promotional program of “Safer, Stronger, Smoother, Greener, Smarter – Better” aptly describes its benchmark safety standards, lively yet economical performance and extensive list of technical innovations and interior appointments.
“Australian athletes are among the best in the world,” said MMAL President and CEO Robert McEniry. “And it is an honour to be able to help these young hopefuls realise their Olympic dream.”
Katie Mactier, Sally McLellan and Kate Hollywood will assist in unveiling Mitsubishi’s exciting range of vehicles, including the new generation Lancer Evolution and Lancer Ralliart, at the Melbourne International Motor Show, from 29th February to 10th March 2008.
