Original Volkswagen Beetle R.I.P? - (Global)

September 22nd, 2008

The San Franscio Chronicles is reporting that Mexico’s City council wants to replace the 80,000 original Volkswagen Beetle’s currently used as the cities taxis.  The aim is that by 2012 the city transport and road ministry will get every car that is over 10 ten years old off the cities streets.

The reason for the proposal is that Mexico has a serious pollution problem on its hand and modern vehicles emit far less pollutants than older cars such as the original classic Beetle.  Taxi drivers will be offered 15,000 pesos to replace their Beetle’s with more modern cars.

The original Beetle was manufactured in Mexico up until 2003.
