UK magazine AutoExpress has just reviewed two variants from the new Golf range, the petrol powered 1.4 TSI and the diesel powered 2.0 TDI and has given them both 5 of out 5 stars. We cannot remember the last time a major auto magazine gave 5 stars for two variants at the launch of a new small car range.
The European press launch for the new Mk.VI Golf was held in Iceland, not the easiest place to gather journalists together. Of the two variants Autoexpress drove they gave the most glowing review to the 1.4 TSI petrol powered model, with its turbo and supercharged TSI engine generating 118kW (158bhp).
In summary AutoExpress noted that in comparison with the Golf’s biggest competitor in the UK, the Ford Focus, the new Golf has opened a gulf between the two that’s unlikely to be closed any time soon.
Australian buyers will have to wait until the 2nd Quarter of 2009 to drive the Mk.VI Golf.
