Mazda say NO to 6 Hybrid - (Global)

August 3rd, 2008

Mazda have announced that there are no plans to develop a hybrid Mazda 6. The company believes that the new 2009 Mazda 6 is capable of delivering a cost-effective midsize vehicle without the need of hybrid technologies.

Jay Amestoy, Vice President of public and government affairs for Mazda North American Operations says: “Sure, the landscape has changed during the past six months, but a hybrid is just not something we're planning on doing at the moment"

We agree that the new 2009 Mazda 6 will be able to deliver great efficiency levels, but we are still surprised nonetheless that they have not opted for a hybrid variant to compete with the likes of Honda and Toyota.

Mr Amestoy says: "Our real-world MPG numbers will be strong, and we just think the fuel economy is pretty good the way it is."

The 2009 Mazda 6 will come in a 2.5L four-cylinder and the larger 3.7L V6 delivering city/highway EPA ratings of 20/29 mpg and 17/25 mpg respectively.
