FPV F6X Powers Ahead in Premium SUV Market

January 31st, 2008

Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) is entering the premium SUV segment with the new F6X featuring the most powerful six cylinder engine in the Australian SUV market.

"Building on the successful Territory Ghia Turbo platform, FPV has delivered a vehicle that will appeal to those drivers who want a competitively priced, Australian produced high performance luxury SUV," said General Manager, Ford Performance Vehicles, Rod Barrett.

“One of the standout features of the F6X is its performance, with 270kW and 550 Nm torque outputs making it the most powerful six-cylinder SUV on the Australian market.”

FPV engineers optimized the suspension and brake package to match the additional performance and continue delivering the class-leading refinement and NVH levels inherent across the Territory range.

The engineering team also created a new Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) calibration to cater for the variety of driving characteristics of an FPV owner.

With 270kW of power and 550Nm of torque, the 4.0 Litre turbo charged DOHC 24 valve in-line 6 delivers a marked increase in operational output, with 25 more kW and 70 more Nm than the Territory Ghia Turbo.

"The FPV Calibration team has taken a Turbo Territory engine and increased the performance whilst still maintaining driveability and emissions compliance," said Head of Programs for Prodrive, Matt Dickie.

“The engineers undertook a full engine mapping and recalibration on the dynamometer of the fuel, spark timing, and boost control.

“This was followed by extensive in-vehicle driveability calibration and the results were validated during hot and cold climate testing.”

Despite the increase in engine performance of the F6X, its fuel economy consumption figure is a respectable 14.9L/100Km.

Vehicle Dynamics
An innovative suspension package for the F6X was developed to complement the increased power and torque outputs.

Advances in tuning techniques and parts available allowed the FPV engineering team to develop a unique damper valve code that improves initial roll control.

The new damper settings give the F6X a more direct steering response and linear feel.

In conjunction with the damper tuning, FPV also spent considerable time developing a new spring rate.

“The spring settings have an increased rate of around 10 percent over the Territory Ghia Turbo, which has in turn decreased the amount of body roll,” said Matt Dickie.

“The final package gives the F6X a sportier handling without compromising ride comfort.”

The FPV F6X also features upgraded front brakes, complete with a premium Brembo 6 piston caliper and increased front rotor size (compared with Territory Ghia Turbo) up from 340mm x 32mm to 355mm x 32mm.

This package provides reliable and stable brake performance and improved pedal feel under all braking events.

Running on new sports-bred 18" five spoke alloys with unique Alpine Silver finish, the P235/55 R18 Goodyear Fortera tyres deliver an optimum balance between grip and comfort.

The F6X features the renowned ZF 6-speed auto transmission featuring Sequential Sports shift. Gear ratios are common to all 6-speed automatic Territorys, and the final drive ratio of 3.46:1 is unchanged from the Territory Ghia Turbo models.

"It is likely that the F6X will attract customers with a range of driving requirements and styles – from the family that enjoys performance motoring through to the enthusiastic sports oriented driver and those F6 sedan owners who are looking to upgrade to a SUV,” said Rod Barrett.

"FPV has developed a Dynamic Stability Control calibration that allows the sports enthusiast driver to enjoy the full benefits of the vehicle's additional performance, while also providing the right level of driver assistance in all situations."

FPV worked with automotive engineering company Bosch to develop a unique DSC calibration to suit the higher engine outputs, the sportier suspension and the premium brakes.

The DSC calibration was optimised to work in conjunction with the 270kW turbo engine, and the all-wheel-drive system with the 18" wheels and tyres.

“The result is excellent, a system that is not too intrusive during spirited driving, but provides great control during limit handling manoeuvres,” said Barrett.

“Owners will enjoy the superior performance, ride and handling, interior luxury and FPV brand qualities that are evident in our hot new sports F6X.”
