Proton's new S16 passenger car has provided a significant boost to the Malaysian car company's sales performance registering a 113.5 percent increase in sales volume for January compared with the same month in 2009.
The result follows an even more impressive 221 percent increase in volume for December over the same month in 2008.
Proton recorded 222 sales in January up from the 104 units it sold in January 09 after posting 334 sales in December.
The performance was the third highest percentage increase for a passenger car manufacturer, only bettered by exotic sports car makers Lamborghini which sold 5 units in January, a 400 percent increase on the one unit it sold in the same month last year and Ferrari which increased volume from 5 to 12 units.
According to Proton Cars Australia managing director John Startari the results reflect the popularity of the new Proton S16, Australia's lowest priced car, which was launched in November 09.
"The S16 has proved incredibly popular thanks to its blend of value, economy, handling and versatility," said Mr Startari.
"We expect this to continue and increase as more variants are added to the S16 range and as more new models arrive across the Proton range in coming months," he added.
"Dealer recruitment is also a high priority for us and we expect our sales volume to further increase as our representation expands across the country as well," he said.
"Australia's one of the most competitive markets in the world with more than 46 brands selling more than 250 models," he said.
"The S16 as the lowest price car has given Proton increased cut through and has driven increased interest in the marque," he added.
Proton S16 is the only new four door sedan available in Australia for less than $16,000 and outpoints many low cost hatches and three door models by offering a 1.6 litre engine and great equipment levels.
Proton is known for its Lotus engineered ride and handling and strong styling and will now also be known for its market leading value.
Miss Universe Australia 2009 winner Rachel Finch is the face of the new Proton S16 and has been featured in TV commercials and the print advertising campaign.
Along with a low purchase price the Proton S16 is economical to own and run sipping an average of just 6.3 litres/100km as per ADR 81/02 while producing 82 kW at 6,000 rpm from its 1.6 litre Campro engine.
Like all Proton sedans the S16 will be covered by a full three years unlimited kilometre warranty along with three years free roadside assistance and a seven-year anti-corrosion warranty.
