Malaysian carmaker Proton has re-signed as naming rights sponsor of NRL team the Wests Tigers continuing an association with the Sydney based club, which commenced in 2006.
Proton inked the new agreement with the Wests Tigers this week and will continue as the club's major sponsor for the season 2010 with an option for 2011.
According to Proton Cars Australia managing director John Startari, the opportunity to continue to back the Wests Tigers is one that could not be passed up given the ongoing branding synergies and marketing opportunities, the NRL franchise offers.
"Sponsoring the Wests Tigers over the past four NRL seasons has provided a valuable platform for Proton to increase brand awareness across Australia and our continued support for the club will be a vital part of our marketing as we launch an expanded model range over the next two years," said John Startari.
"Apart from sharing the tiger as an emblem with Proton the Wests Tigers are a young, vibrant and entertaining team, they have a wide support base and enormous merchandise sales and this enable us to take our message to millions of people," he added.
Mr Startari admitted that there had been negotiations with the Sydney Roosters NRL club following an approach from that club
"It was a very attractive package and we had to give it due consideration however loyalty and an established track record with the Wests Tigers led us to believe that this continued to be a better fit for Proton," he said.
"The Wests Tigers is a very well run club with a strong work ethic amongst players with a focus on achieving their goals and we believe they will be a real force in the NRL for years to come," he added.
"Our research has shown the Wests Tigers is a very popular franchise and for those who aren't supporters it often shows up as most people's second favourite NRL team, mainly due to the exciting play and clean image with players like Benji Marshall spearheading that image," said John Startari.
Proton will be launching a number of significant new models in Australia during 2010 and will also be expanding our dealer network particularly in the Sydney region and our support of the Wests Tigers will be a major asset.
Rugby League attendances have boomed this year with spectator numbers up by over 20 percent this season while TV viewing numbers have also soared during 2009.
The company will shortly launch it new S16 economy sedan in Australia and will be appointing a number of new dealers in the Sydney metropolitan area during the next six months to grow sales in the nation's largest vehicle market.
