The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is Wheels Car of the Year

January 23rd, 2008

Melbourne – The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been awarded Wheels Magazine’s Car of the Year.

The award-winning C-Class beat every eligible new model passenger vehicle launched in Australia during 2007 to win the prestigious Wheels Car of the Year award, regarded as one of motoring’s most coveted prizes world-wide.

Over a week of intense testing the panel of eight motoring judges from Wheels reviewed the twenty new models.

According to Wheels Magazine, “The W204 is also the model that marks a welcome return to the intrinsic engineering integrity once taken for granted from the world’s oldest car maker.

“All the great qualities that made Mercedes-Benz the envy of every other manufacturer from the ‘60s to the early ‘90s, when the company undoubtedly built the best cars in the world, return in the new C-Class.”

At an exclusive ceremony held at Channel Nine studios in Melbourne last night and broadcast nationally on A Current Affair, the highly-prized Wheels Car of the Year trophy was presented to Horst von Sanden, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Cars at Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific.

“Thank you to the judges for all of your efforts and making our C-Class your first choice,” said von Sanden.

“Most importantly thank you to our customers, who voted for this car since its release by making C-Class their first choice and the clear leader in its segment.

“This award reflects the overwhelming success that the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class has achieved in the Australian market.

“This is a great success for our brand and I am proud of my team and our company”, he said.

The coveted award was presented by Mr Ged Bulmer, editor of Wheels Magazine. During his presentation he commented, “Across the entire model spectrum and in every aspect of its performance, the new C-Class represents a significant step forward over the previous model.

Wheels magazine made clear why the Mercedes–Benz C-Class was the judges’ first choice.

“Here is a high-quality, incredibly capable and enjoyable car that is more affordable than ever before,” he said.

“The C-Class has the essential engineering honesty, the almost total lack of superficiality that the Wheels Car of the Year judges love.

“It’s simply a brilliantly functional car.”

The Wheels Magazine Car of the Year is the world’s longest running continuous motoring prize and last night’s announcement makes the Mercedes-Benz C-Class its 42nd winner.

In 2007, Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific recorded its most successful year of new vehicle sales ever with a string of double-digit sales growth figures, shadowing those of the overall Australian passenger car and SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) market.
