Hyundai’s i30 Chosen as Spain's "Car of the Year"

February 20th, 2008

  1. Most prestigious award in Spain’s automotive industry
  2. i30 beat its rivals by largest ever margin

The Hyundai’s i30 was chosen as Spain’s ‘Car of the Year 2008’, proving once again that the Korean company, the world’s fifth-largest automobile manufacturer, has made huge advances in technology, design and safety. The award follows the i30’s recent recognition in Australia, where it picked up CARSguide’s ‘2007 Car of the Year’ and ‘2007 Green Car of the Year’.

In Spain’s ‘Car of the Year 2008’ award, which was organised by the Spanish newspaper ABC, the i30 gained a total of 220 points, leaving its competition well behind. The Fiat 500, placed second, scored 52 points, while the Ford Mondeo came in third with 36 points. The i30’s score gave it the greatest ever margin by which the winner has led its rivals, which also included the Toyota Auris (Corolla), the Renault Laguna and Peugeot’s 308.

The i30 was judged by a jury comprising 52 journalists from a wide variety of motoring media, including newspapers, specialist magazines, television, radio and news agencies. The jury based their points on exterior and interior design, reliability, performance, safety and market segment volume.

“This latest award confirms Hyundai as a leading global manufacturer”, said Kevin McCann, Sales & Marketing Director for Hyundai Motor Company Australia, “It clearly positions i30 as a car which meets the high expectations of European drivers”.

Spain’s “Car of the Year” awards began in 1973, with the 2008 awards ceremony being presided over by Spain’s Minister of Industry, D. Joan Clos and the President of the Community of Madrid, Mrs. Esperanza Aguirre. The award was accepted by the President of Hyundai Motor Europe, Mr. Kun Hee Ahn.

The results of the 2008 awards:
  1. • Hyundai i30: 220 points
  2. • Fiat 500: 52 points
  3. • Ford Mondeo: 36 points
