Ford Australia has pulled the covers off a number of major new models at the Melbourne International Motor Show today, along with a preview of the company's vision for sustainable motoring, which is set to join the local Ford line-up in late 2009.

A new Fiesta model from Ford's highly fuel efficient, low CO2 emissions ECOnetic vehicle range was unveiled at this year's show, along with new Focus and Ranger model lines, a new-look SY Territory MkII range and a new Mondeo wagon variant.

A European-specification Fiesta ECOnetic, which took centre stage on the Ford stand, gave Australian consumers their first look at one of the company's latest, highly fuel efficient and environmentally advanced, ultra-low CO2 vehicles.

"The Fiesta ECOnetic will be added to our Fiesta model line-up towards the end of 2009 and promises to be one of the most fuel efficient and lowest CO2 emitting vehicles ever offered for sale in Australia," Ford Australia President & CEO Marin Burela said

"With the ECOnetic brand, you don't have to sacrifice style or performance to drive an environmentally advanced vehicle – Fiesta ECOnetic is great to look at, just as good to drive and affordable too.

"Fiesta ECOnetic's reduced CO2 emissions come hand in hand with improved fuel efficiency, which means you could reduce your environmental footprint and save money on fuel costs."

The European-specification Fiesta ECOnetic achieves fuel consumption of 3.7 L/100km and CO2 emissions of just 98 g/km, making it the lowest CO2 vehicle both against its homeland competitors and within Ford's entire European model range.

"If the European-spec Fiesta ECOnetic was available for sale in Australia today, it would rank as the most fuel efficient and lowest CO2 emitting-vehicle across the entire local new car market, including hybrid models," Mr Burela said.

Combining Ford's kinetic design styling with high-tech conventional powertrain technology, the ECOnetic models use low viscosity transmission and engine oils, lower drive resistance, improved aerodynamics and super-efficient diesel engines to deliver ultra-low CO2 emissions.

While the European-specification Fiesta ECOnetic model on display will give visitors to this year's motor show a taste of what they can expect from Ford's approach to sustainable mobility, full Australian specification and pricing for the Fiesta ECOnetic will be released at a later date.

"We are continually evaluating our vehicle line-up and looking at ways to develop it further, so we are excited to be able to offer show-goers a unique opportunity to preview the Fiesta ECOnetic ahead of its arrival later this year," Mr Burela said.

"Its introduction to the local Ford line-up will provide a genuine alternative to those customers who prioritise low CO2 emission performance when it comes to choosing a new vehicle.

"It will also enable us to gauge consumer reaction to the broader ECOnetic philosophy, with respect to other fuel efficient, low CO2 emission models that may be considered for the Australian market."

New LV Focus

Ford recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of the global Focus nameplate with the release of a dynamic new model, the LV-series Focus, which has made its Australian debut at this year's Melbourne International Motor Show.
Featuring a dynamic new look with kinetic design styling cues, an upgraded interior and a host of impressive new features and technologies, Focus retains the acclaimed driving excellence that has established it as a leader in the small car market around the world.

The introduction of Ford's new 'PowerShift' six-speed automatic transmission on the TDCi model, heads the list of major upgrades for the new Focus range.

The new PowerShift transmission is an innovative, six-speed, double-clutch automatic transmission, which is available with the 2.0-litre Duratorq common-rail turbodiesel engine. It is extremely refined and shifts smoothly through its six-speed gearing more efficiently than a conventional automatic transmission.

PowerShift demonstrates a high degree of driving comfort and agility in congested urban driving, while also proving more fuel efficient than a conventional torque converter automatic transmission, with a combined fuel consumption rating of 5.9 L/100km.

The new LV Focus is available in a series of four core models for the Australian market. The Focus CL is the lead-in model, followed by the contemporary LX and TDCi models, and the exciting Focus Zetec derivative.

The exhilarating, high-performance XR5 Turbo model was introduced in LV-specification in mid-2008, while the rest of the new LV Focus range will go on sale in the second quarter of 2009.

SY Territory MkII

The new look SY Territory MkII range was also unveiled at the Ford stand, featuring key exterior design changes, fresh interior environments, a revised model line-up and a host of additional equipment now fitted as standard.

Two Territory models – a Territory Ghia AWD and a Territory TS RWD – were on display at the motor show to give customers a first look at the SY Territory MkII line-up, which will go on sale in the second quarter of 2009.

Territory TX now comes standard with side curtain airbags, cruise control, 17-inch alloy wheels and a full body colour package for the bumpers, door handles and mirrors.

Territory TS is also fitted with the full body colour package, along with a reverse parking camera, front fog lamps, leather-wrapped steering wheel, handbrake and gearshift, and a third row seat.

Ghia models also gain a third row seat as standard equipment, along with an Alpine rear DVD system, side steps, rear privacy glass, body coloured door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The top-of-the-range Ghia Turbo picks up the same list of additions, along with a new wheel design for its standard 18-inch alloy wheels.

New PK Ranger

The next generation Ranger light commercial vehicle made its Australian-debut at the Melbourne International Motor Show, ahead of going on sale in the second quarter of 2009.

Inspired by the high-impact Ranger MAX show truck – which Ford revealed at the Thailand International Motor Expo in November – the new Ford Ranger puts into production several distinctive design elements that create a new look for the compact pick-up segment.

The new model showcases an all-new front end design, which delivers a fresh, modern exterior, along with interior upgrades, key feature additions and a revised model line-up, headlined by the introduction of the new top-of-the-range Wildtrak model.

Wildtrak features unique exterior and interior equipment over and above XLT specification level, including 18-inch alloy wheels, an Alcantara leather interior and an innovative roller shutter to cover and secure the load area, which will be available as a no cost option.

New Mondeo Zetec wagon

Rounding out the list of new Ford models unveiled at the show was the new Mondeo Zetec wagon, which will join the Mondeo range in mid-2009.

"First shown at the Melbourne International Motor Show last year, the Mondeo wagon is a fantastic addition to the existing award-winning Mondeo line-up, offering performance, safety, load-carrying ability and plenty of European style to fill the niche between the Mondeo hatch and the Falcon wagon," Mr Burela said.

Mondeo Zetec wagon is powered by a 2.3-litre Duratec four-cylinder engine, which produces 118 kW of power and 208 Nm of torque, and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with Sequential Sports Shift.

It comes equipped with the same high level of standard features as the Zetec hatch and sedan, including 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, dual zone climate control, a premium Sony audio system, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, capless refuelling and 'follow me home' lighting.

The Mondeo Zetec wagon also offers a safety package mirroring that of its hatch and sedan siblings.

Key safety features include an enhanced Intelligent Protection System (IPS) complemented by an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Dynamic Stability Control, an automatic hazard warning light and seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag and full length side curtain airbags.

Key wagon features include an impressive load carrying space, which provides a luggage capacity of 542 litres with the rear passenger seats in the upright position, increasing to a capacious 1733 litres with the rear passenger seats folded flat.
